Leading manufacturers of sailboat hardware Harken UK are generously supporting the regatta, joining an increasing number of marine companies that recognise the emergence of Poole as an important sailing venue with its excellent sailing waters and facilities.

Following the announcement of a competition for the best competitor’s on-water video clip, the organising committee have decided to provide 20 digital video cameras for use by crew members. These will be handed out each day between the fleets, and it is planned to show the best of each day’s clips during the evening prizegivings and social events.

With up to four race areas planned in Poole Bay and one within Poole Harbour the support structures for the race officers, their teams, the RIB drivers and safety boat crews are being put in place. The teams who will be calculating the results are preparing their laptops. The risk assessments are written and the 1001 other things that are part of running a large regatta are being organised to ensure the smooth running event that all the competitors expect.

 The regatta has added the Sonata Southerns and the Elan Cup to its list of Championships encompassed within the event. The Sonata Southerns need no introduction and with the ever popular 23 footer having a strong following in Poole and the Solent a good entry is expected. The Elan Cup is a new trophy sponsored by Elan Yachts UK and is open to all Elan yachts entering the event.

 The Notice of Race and the online entry  forms are about to go live on the event website www.pooleregatta.co.uk and the organising committee are offering a free entry to the first entry received from outside the UK.

 After its popularity at the 2010 regatta, the free inter-club water transport to get competitors to social events and prizegivings is being run with extended operating hours. It is expected that the onboard singing will again rival the local disco party boats in volume if not musicality.

 New this year is a competition for the best video clips shot on the water from a competing boat. You only need to look on You Tube to see how the rise in popularity of Action and sport cams has allowed fantastic footage to be taken on board. It is hoped to show some of these clips each day at the daily prizegivings and social events.

The J24 fleet have chosen Poole as their venue for their 2012 Nationals. The Championship will be held during the International Paint Regatta in June and will be a major event for the class. Poole has retained a strong J24 fleet since the class began in 1979. Now, over 30 years later, Poole Harbour hosts a regular turnout of at least 10 boats and often more on both Monday and Thursday evenings.

The J24 fleet is currently experiencing a resurgance, and with the demise of sports boat fleets such as the Melges and 707, the J24 has become a dominant sportsboat with over 5000 sold around the world. The 2012 J24 Nationals will feature many youth sailors joining the fleet after using them at various match racing events. On the other hand, some Poole sailors have been enjoying J’s for over 30 years and now rely more upon experience than fitness; such is the versatility of these classic sportsboats that the average age on at least two of the leading Poole J24s is over 55.

The J24 fleet will join around 200 other boats for the three days of racing in June.
